TALLAHASSEE-- Continuing his challenge of the two-party political system, U.S. Senate candidate Willie Logan this morning addressed a large crowd of supporters and political independents gathered in the courtyard of the State Capitol. The crowd included a prominent organization of motorcyclists and bikers known as A.B.A.T.E. (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) of Florida. In his speech, Independent candidate Willie Logan called for American politics "to be freed from the shackles of big, corporate money and dominance by special interests." "We cannot allow our political worth to be determined by our net worth any longer," Logan proclaimed. "Both major parties continue to sell off our government, piece by piece, to the highest bidder. If we don’t put a stop to it by electing people who aren’t beholden to the two parties and their big corporate special interest friends, we will lose our government altogether. Now is the time to come together and reclaim the power of our individual voices," Logan said. Logan noted that his campaign for U.S. Senate is gathering momentum precisely because the two major parties have disconnected themselves from the real concerns of average citizens. "In the next five years, more than a quarter of all registered voters will be independents. This is a growing legion of people who have learned the hard way that the Democratic and Republican parties are in it only for themselves and for their large corporate contributors. Big Money has poisoned the well of American democracy, and it’s our job to clean the well," Logan said. Logan announced that, following qualifying for office on the first day of the qualifying period (May 8), he will begin a statewide motorcycle tour of Florida to talk to voters about his independent candidacy for U.S. Senate and the political system’s dependence on Big Money. Logan will kick off his statewide tour in Century, Florida, the same town former governor Lawton Chiles -- later known as "Walkin’" Lawton -- began his memorable "Walk across Florida" during his first U.S. Senate race in 1970. Logan said "Our motorcycle tour is a symbol of everything that’s missing in American politics today. Freedom to be your own person and not have your vision clouded by others. Freedom from being beholden to special interests that prevent you from doing what’s right for the people of this country. Freedom from being chained to a political party that represents the rich by exploiting those less fortunate. Freedom to say what’s right and to do something different for a change-- to represent the real interests of the American people and not just cater to the corporate elite because they’ve paid you off." The A.B.A.T.E. of Florida motorcycle group, which organized today’s rally at the Capitol, will ride with Logan throughout his tour as a show of solidarity with his independent crusade to return government to ordinary citizens. Logan also will be joined on the first leg of his ride by Century Councilwoman Marie McMurray, who walked the first mile with Chiles in his 1970 walk. "I encourage everyone who feels his or her voice isn’t heard in Washington to get involved in my campaign for U.S. Senate and to join me on my motorcycle tour. The time has come to take our government back for the people and pull it away from this hostile corporate takeover," Logan concluded.
