Rep. Willie Logan brought his campaign for the U.S. Senate to the Columbia County Courthouse yesterday afternoon.

The Democratic Representative from Miami-Dade County is running for U.S. Senate as an independent.

"I'm getting a feel for local issues in Florida," Logan said. "I hope to earn the respect of the state," he said. "The good thing is I don't have to wear a suit and tie," Logan said.

Logan began his journey on May 8 in Century, the same town where former governor Lawton Chiles began his "Walk Across Florida" tour during his U.S. Senate campaign in 1970. After criss-crossing the state, Logan is scheduled to complete his journey in Key West on July 4.

Logan arrived at the Columbia County Courthouse at 4:30 p.m. Making his way to the office of
Clerk of the Court Dewitt Cason, he stopped in every office and shook every hand along the way.
"Hi, I'm Willie Logan," he said to each person. "I'm a candidate for the United States Senate. I'd
appreciate your consideration next November."

A staff member followed, handing out his campaign literature.  Cason took Logan on a tour of the
main floor offices and the basement offices before Logan had to leave for an interview with a television station in Jacksonville.

To be effective in office, Logan said he must understand the issues and understand how the issues affect the community.  He said he can work with the leaders of both parties and develop relationships with other state's senators to get Florida's issues passed.

Earlier in the day, Logan ate breakfast with students at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee,
visited the courthouse and a nursing home in Monticello, visited the courthouse and packing house in Madison and visited the courthouse and a poultry plant in Live Oak.

Last night, he camped out at Stephen Foster State Park.

At 11 a.m., he plans to mount his motorcycle again to continue his trip back to Jacksonville, this time to visit The Landing.

"Rain doesn't stop the postman, so it won't stop us," Logan said. "As I hope it won't stop the voters," he added.
