STATE REPRESENTATIVE WILLIE LOGAN
LAUNCHES U.S. SENATE EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE
Senior House Member Considers Run
for Seat Vacated by U.S. Senator Connie Mack
TALLAHASSEE
– One of Florida’s most experienced public officials today
announced the creation of an exploratory committee to gauge support for a
possible run for the United States Senate. After 17 years in the Florida
House, State Representative Willie Logan (D, Opa-locka) is considering a
run for the U.S. Senate in what is expected to be the most hotly contested
campaign of the 2000 election cycle.
“I’m
proud of my service to Florida both at the local and state levels, and I’m
excited about possibly continuing my service at another level,” Logan said.
“This election should be about the hopes and dreams of all Floridians. Our
goal is to find out firsthand the top concerns of the people of Florida and what
our nation’s government should be doing to address them.”
Logan’s
announcement follows numerous inquiries and much urging from constituents and
supporters. In fact, rumors of a Logan run have circulated throughout Florida
since U.S. Senator Connie Mack announced his retirement earlier this year.
To lead the exploratory committee, Rep. Logan has tapped former State Representative Mike Abrams, a Miami businessman and longtime friend, who will serve as committee chair.
“Willie
Logan has been a great legislator and a friend to Florida,” Abrams said. “Our
committee will launch the dialogue between Rep. Logan and all the people of
Florida.”
Logan
said he will travel throughout the state and listen to the concerns of
Floridians and hear their ideas for making our nation stronger. He praised
retiring Senator Connie Mack saying, “the people of Florida deserve a
successor who will work just as hard to represent them in our nation’s
capitol.”
The
veteran state lawmaker said that if he makes a decision to enter the race, “it
will be based on providing the people with leadership, not partisanship.”
Recently,
Logan was rated the sixth most influential state legislator by the Miami Herald, and
was the only Democrat to make the top ten. Prior to his service in the Florida
Legislature, Logan was mayor of Opa-locka, Florida, in northern Dade County –
the youngest person ever elected mayor of any Dade County municipality.
Logan said that he is looking forward to hearing from as many people as possible over the next several weeks and invited those interested in a better America to contact the exploratory committee or access its website at:
