TALLAHASSEE-- At a news conference today at the Florida Press Center, U.S. Senate candidate Willie Logan outlined his vision for a better Florida, including detailed proposals in the areas of school readiness, affordable home ownership and gun control, that he intends to advocate for if elected to the U.S. Senate. Logan began his press conference by stating that "the most important issue concerning the future well-being of our nation involves insuring that each and every child is ready and eager to learn by the time he or she reaches first grade. School readiness will be the cornerstone initiative of my campaign." Logan then rolled out his plan for nationwide and voluntary public education for all children beginning at three years old, including:
Logan explained that his proposed nationwide pre-kindergarten initiative provides parents with the help they need to ensure that all children have a good start in life and a chance to succeed and become future productive citizens of our nation. "We know that 85% of a child’s intellect, personality, and social skills are formed by age five. We also know that children in better quality early education and care have stronger skills, better relationships with teachers and more positive self-perceptions," Logan explained. "A full 25% of America’s children age five and under live in poverty and lack adequate child care. 30% enter first grade significantly behind their classmates and many of them will never catch up. This is not a formula for a nation to thrive economically. We must do better." "I want to make sure that American children aren’t locked out of a productive future at age five because our nation wouldn’t make a comprehensive commitment to their early development. My pre-kindergarten initiative will ensure that all children will come to school healthy, happy and prepared to succeed. That is how we will build a first-class nation. It is simply and clearly in our national interest to give each child that chance," Logan said. Next, Logan discussed the need to raise the rate of home ownership nationally, as a means of building stronger neighborhoods for America’s families and contributing to America’s economic growth. Citing statistical evidence that suggests the current rate of home ownership nationally hovers around 67%, Logan commented that the low rate is largely due to a number of obstacles potential buyers face when contemplating buying a home. "For the benefit of our communities, I want to raise our national rate of home ownership to 75%. We can do this if we eliminate some of the principal barriers working families face when trying to buy a home," Logan explained. "Chief among these barriers are rising housing prices that make it difficult to find affordable housing, a lack of education regarding how to buy a home, and lack of proper credit to obtain a mortgage." To tear down these barriers, Logan advocated three measures:
Logan then addressed the increase in gun violence nationally. "Young adults under 21 aren’t legally permitted to drink alcohol, yet we allow those under 21 to buy guns. It’s common sense to mandate driver education classes and testing before handing out drivers’ licenses, yet we don’t require any firearms education and testing for those purchasing and possessing guns. It’s crazy!" Logan exclaimed. "We must first limit access to guns to responsible, law abiding adults, and then we must ensure that those individuals who are permitted to own and carry guns do so with extreme care." To achieve these goals, Logan proposed three specific measures he would advocate in the U.S. Senate to stem the rising tide of gun violence:
Logan said he intends to campaign on all three themes throughout the duration of his campaign. "A major reason I’m running as an independent is that neither of the two major parties are addressing how we can use the federal surplus to meet the needs of the middle-class and the working poor. These are important issues, not just for Florida, but for the whole country. By implementing a few simple steps –steps that we can actually pay for in current dollars– we can ensure we will have a safer America with strong neighborhoods and a well-educated workforce," Logan said.
